Purpose of the Volunteer Position
Volunteer at a cool museum in Kitsap County, Washington, that draws visitors from all over the world! The U.S. Naval Undersea Museum offers visitors the opportunity to explore the history, operations, and technology of the U.S. Navy’s undersea forces.
As a Museum Store Attendant, you provide customer service to visitors who wish to browse and make purchases in the museum store. Proceeds from store sales support the museum mission of preserving and interpreting naval undersea history, science, and operations.

Goals
- Serve as a welcoming and competent presence for U.S. and international visitors that come to the museum store to browse and shop, and
- Carry out museum store policies and procedures to ensure visitor safety and allow for proper sales accounting.

Scheduling
Museum Store Attendant volunteer shifts are as follows:
- Monday, Wednesday-Friday, 9:45am-1:00pm (known as the “AM” shift)
- Monday, Wednesday-Friday, 12:45pm-4:15pm (known as the “PM” shift)
- The museum is closed on Tuesday, so there are no Store Attendant shifts on those days.
Museum Store Attendants will coordinate with the Store Manager to set their volunteer schedule. Available shifts are subject to change based on store operating schedule.
It is expected that each Museum Store Attendant will contribute at least TWO shifts per month (for a total of 6.5 hours) after the initial 4-hour orientation session and “on the job” training shifts (as many as needed to feel comfortable in the position).
Position Responsibilities
The Museum Store Attendant reports to the Museum Store Manager and is able to:
- Advise customers on the location, selection, price, use, and care of goods available from the store, with the aim of encouraging them to buy and to return to buy in the future.
- Operate a cash register and accept cash or credit payments.
- Reconcile daily sales.
- Accept deliveries.
- Answer the phone and direct calls as necessary.
- Keep the store tidy and attractive.
- Optionally, participate in periodic stocktaking/inventory.

Training
Training for this position is provided in the form of an initial four-hour classroom session orientation, where we discuss museum history and operations and tour the museum building. Post-orientation, Museum Store Attendants train with the Museum Store Manager and other current volunteers to learn day-to-day operations and procedures.
Additional training is conducted during shift changes at the museum and via the monthly volunteer newsletter, the Sonar Echo, and the museum’s volunteer system.
Supplies and Equipment
No special supplies and equipment are needed to perform this role. The U.S. Naval Undersea Museum Store office contains many resources to assist in the performance of the job duties, and additional guidance is always available from the Museum Store Manager.
